DUTIES: Provide mental health treatment services to the offender population under the supervision of a licensed mental health care provider. Position responsibilities include but are not limited to providing input and assistance to mental health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, parole board assessments, and clinical interventions; group, brief and individual therapy; developing, implementing, and modifying treatment plans; consultation with offenders and staff; provide crisis intervention, all under supervision; participation in educational meetings and training workshops. Judgment is used to select and apply existing guidelines to address behavioral health treatment needs of offenders; serve as consultant for unit staff regarding assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning; ensure accurate reporting/documentation of mental health needs levels, including psychiatric and developmental disability needs level codes. Assure continuity of care for offenders by making appropriate referral and providing necessary information and documentation for receiving units, facilities, and/or agencies. Document in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive offender mental health records. Inform offenders regarding mental health care, to include: consequences of maladaptive behavior; desired and undesirable effects or prescribed mental health medication. Listen to offender concerns and provide counseling and direction. Communicate to advise, counsel, and/or guide staff within the clinical unit, the facility, and outside agencies to ensure continuity and direction of mental health care. Communicate regarding complaints, problems, transfers, classifications, and offender behavioral management issues. Maintain standards of the program and work unit through compliance with all applicable professional, departmental, organizational and unit standards. Provide escort and apply and remove restraints to support movement of offenders to treatment activities, may physically restrain offenders to support safe unit management. Promote and be accountable for the safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment through conscientious observations and sensitive item control. All duties related to treatment are under supervision of the mental health supervisor.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors Degree in a Mental Health Discipline.
SUBSTITUTION: Four (4) years providing mental health treatment counseling which provided the
same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education may substitute for the
bachelor’s degree. An Associates Degree in a Mental Health Discipline and two (2) years providing mental health treatment counseling may substitute for the bachelor’s degree.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must be 21 years of age;

Posses a high school diploma or G.E.D.;

Possess a valid State of Colorado Driver’s License;

Have NO felony convictions;

Successfully complete the Department of Corrections Basic Training upon hire, initial drug screening, and random drug screening throughout employment;

Possess the physical ability to successfully complete PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics);
-
Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
-
Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
-
Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
-
Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
-
Swing a baton in a striking technique;
-
Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
-
Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
-
Successful completion of a background investigation. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges;
-
Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
-
Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
-
Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
-
Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
-
Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;
-
Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
-
Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
-
Willing and able to travel;
-
Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
-
TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
